(Brasilia).- Senator Irajá has announced that he has secured the votes needed to pass the proposed legislation on games of chance in Brazil. The bill, which seeks to legalize betting in casinos, bingos, horse races, and the popular game "jogo do bicho," is set to be voted on by the Senate in September.

Senator Irajá claims votes to approve gaming legislation in Brazil

Senator Irajá (PSD-TO) said on Wednesday (21.Aug.2024) in an interview with a local media that he had secured the necessary votes to approve Bill 2.234 of 2022, which deals with the legalisation of games of chance in Brazil.

The proposal was approved in a tight vote in the CCJ (Constitution and Justice Committee) by 14 votes in favour and 12 against and will be considered in the Senate plenary during the concentrated effort of the first week of September.

The text is ripe to be considered and voted on. I'm convinced that we already have the votes to approve the bill, which is important for Brazil,’ said the congressman. Irajá also said that of the G20 countries (group of the world's 20 largest economies), only Brazil and Indonesia have not yet legalised gambling.

Even Saudi Arabia, a Muslim nation, has already done so.’ As well as authorising the installation of casinos in tourist centres and integrated leisure complexes, the text repeals the law that has criminalised gambling since 1946.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) has already said that he will sanction the bill if it is approved by the upper house.
